The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 15 -18, 1962 BETTY AND MIKE ARRIVE HOME



Friday, June 15, 1962 MOWED

A very nice hot day. Hot. Today Wesley Gorman mowed all the grass. It was a wonderful day. Hot. Blanche, Delores and I to town in a.m. In PM Blanche and I painted the maroon in the dining room. I made Mike’s donuts, well bake Betty’s beans tomorrow. Mike and Betty are to leave Cleveland at 6 PM for Maine.



Saturday, June 16, 1962

HOT HOT. BET AND MIKE Came today, Got my beans in, cleaned up, all my work, flew around like a parched pea in a hot skillet. Got ready, took a bath and off to Portland at 12:30. Got there at 1:30. As we entered (?) days a phone call came for me, it was Betty. They had arrived early. We went over and there they was bag and baggage. Was very glad to see them.



Sunday, June 17, 1962

Finished the Haying. Mike fished all day, got 2. Very nice day. Got the haying all done. Kennie, Dot called also Bob, Blanche and Fern and Lloyd. Fern entertained the twins, their wives also Bob and Blanche and Lloyd for cookout honoring them for their birthdays. Betty and I made sandwiches and a salad, ate outside.



Monday, June 18, 1962

Cooler. Sunny. I washed and churned. Betty and I talked. She is so pleased to be home. In evening Betty, Mike and I played croquet. Betty up about 11. Mike’s not up till around 3 PM. Billie took them down to see Dawn. In evening they went down to Ferns. Betty had Mike’s 2 trout for her supper. I had one. Good.
