The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 23 - 25, 1962

Saturday, June 23, 1962

Cloudy and showers in a.m., cleared in PM. Blanche here all day. We got ice cream made. Also made brownies and date bars. Made bread, and rolls and baked beans. She and I went to town. In evening they all, Kennie, Dot, Kennard, Delores, Fern and Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis came over and Bob and Blanche showed the pictures on screen so Mike could see them before he goes back to camp. Picked 5 quarts.

Sunday, June 24, 1962

Cloudy and showers in a.m. We had to postpone the picnic. Bill, Billie fixed the screens. Betty and Mike worked upstairs. I did the work, got the meals. Aunt Ava called and Kennie and Dot. A miserable day.

Monday, June 25, 1962

A very nice day. Quite on the warm side. I washed. Wrote to Esther. Betty and Mike took a cookout lunch, went down through the woods, poor Lassie went and she was so tired when she got home. We saw a little fawn on our lawn last night, spotted. Bill and I down to Ferns and to town after supper. Fern came back with us. Stayed till midnight. Fern, Betty, Mike and I played cards. Betty, Mike and Blanche down to beach swimming. Kennard called. Verna and children over to Harrison tonight. Verna’s father died this morning. Picked 4 quarts strawberries.
