The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 28 - 31, 1962

Saturday, July 28, 1962

A nice day. They began haying at Lloyd’s. Lawrence Boynton did it. Billie helped. They mowed it all down today. We had a good baked beans supper tonight. Fern came up later and stayed till Lloyd came.

Sunday, July 29, 1962

Cloudy in early morning. Cleared late day. Clouded up at night. Blanche came over, she, Betty and I walked down through the woods to Fern and Lloyd’s. We had Italian sandwiches, fruit and coffee. Came home, Kennie and Dot called. Finished up the haying at Lloyd’s today. Early hours of this morning, a bad accident on the ridge.

Monday, July 30, 1962

A nice day. Except we had some showers. I washed clothes, dried quite well. Betty over to Aunt Ava’s most of the day. She got a letter from MIKE. MIKE, her man. In evening Bill, Betty and I up over ridge to see where the accident was, to see the cars, and down to cemetery. Dianne Fabello died early this morning of injuries from the awful car accident of last Saturday night or early Sunday morning.

A DREARY MISERABLE DAY. Gray, cool and rainy and misty. A MISERABLE DAY. Blanche went to Norway. I rode over with her. I came home and done up rest of the housework, picked greens and berries. Fern, Lloyd called. Betty on the lonesome side. Betty and I down to Ferns in evening. We made fudge.
