The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 16 - 19, 1962



Monday, July 16, 1962 Permanent for Betty

I washed. Not very good weather. Betty had a permanent today, by Kay Fleck Howard. It looks very nice. Kay does very well. I washed, not a very good day. Helen called in p.m. to pick up Kay. Betty down to Helen and Kay’s for a cookout. Had a good time. Bill and I down and got her. Picked first mess of green PEAS.



Tuesday, July 17, 1962 LETTER FROM MIKE

Betty got her first letter from her husband. I cleaned up the house. Ironed, had green peas for supper. Good. Dawn called today. Invited Betty down for a few days. Betty was so pleased to go. Holly Smart Lyons called. Bill down to Ferns in evening to watch TV ballgame.



Wednesday, July 18, 1962

Letter from Mike. Another one of those cloudy days. I done up the work, made pie, picked greens, made pot roast. Betty got a letter from Mike. In evening Fern and I went to Sara’s baby shower.



Thursday, July 19, 1962 2 Letters from Mike


A very nice day all day. Sunshine and warm. I had doors and windows open. I picked peas, greens and a few raspberries. Aunt Ava brought Mama a dinner (birthday). Betty had two letters from Mike. Betty still at Dawns.
