The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 23 - 26, 1962 Betty Creighton Crook Died



Wednesday, May 23, 1962

Sunny. Letter from Betty and Mike. I varnished Billie’s rug. I cleaned the back porch. Amy called to pay for Herbert’s flowers. Blanche called in evening. I went over to Aunt Ava’s after supper. Bill down to Gordon’s. Billie to town. Nice letter from Betty and Mike. Are still happy. I called Stella Cole about my paper.



Thursday, May 24, 1962

Rain all day. Blanche came over, we got her some manure. She and I picked greens. We watched the TV. Astronaut Scott Carpenter orbited the Earth three times today. When he came down he didn’t land as where he was supposed to. It was another successful orbit flight. It was very interesting to watch. Mrs. Eleanor Parker called to get Betty’s booklets and pictures etc. Billie had to work tonight. Kennard called.


Friday, May 25, 1962

Very nice day. It has been very nice and sunny today after the awful showers last night. Today Blanche took Aunt Ava to the clinic in Portland. Uncle Lewis over here all day. I done up my regular work then I cleaned up the whole house. Washed all the floors. Got lunch. I cleaned the downstairs bathroom, got supper etc. Gordon Brill plowed garden. Betty Baxter Creighton Crook, Bill’s mother, died today at age 86 years 11 months 26 days.



Saturday, May 26, 1962

A nice day. I done up the work. Blanche and I got greens and froze them. I went to town and sent a box to Betty, clothes and cowboy boots. To Dawn’s shower in East Sebago in evening. Blanche, Fern and I.
