The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 8 - 10, 1992 Brogan's First Day of School

Tuesday, September 8, 1992 BROGAN ALYSSA HORTON’S FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

A VERY HAPPY DAY FOR US ALL. We went up to her house and see her get on the bus. Then we all, Cameron too, all went to the school to see her get off the bus. A lot of mothers and some fathers were there. Then at 11:30 we were all up to her house to see her get off the bus. A very happy time. Carmen, Betty, Betty S, Esther, Kim and I and Cameron were there. Anne Harriman called also to see Kim. Betty came up here and cleaned the house, got the supper. Esther helped. Then Betty and Walt had their field all mowed.

It cleared off today and the sun came out finally and it was hot. I had to go to Dr. Shriver for eye test. I got to go again in a month. Came home, watched one show. Esther got a good supper. Betty up here after supper. Told Esther she could rent her apartment which pleased her very much. The girl that came to look at it didn’t take it. Dorothea called tonight. Susan done well with her English at school. Monica called this p.m. I went down to see Cliff with Dorothea and Esther. He looks bad to me.

At 4:45 this morning Esther left for the plane to go home to Florida. Susan came and got her. It was lonesome here and quiet after she left. She called tonight after she got home. Zak worked on Betty’s building today. Brogan had such a good time down there and Cameron too outside all p.m. Betty and Zak don’t communicate much now. Betty came up and got a good supper for us tonight. Brogan ate with us. I did some washing today. Tom called a minute. Zak wrecked Walt’s truck tonight. Someone ran into him over to North Bridgton.
