The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Tuesday, September 22, 1992

 

A cloudy rainy day. On the cool side. I’m glad it wasn’t like this yesterday. Today we did a washing. Esther been busy today. She and Susan down. I watched TV in p.m. I sent a letter today. We had heavy showers (thundershowers) tonight. Esther took Susan, Vince and Monica out for supper tonight at Shorelands. Rest of chickens went tonight. The turkeys are going tomorrow.

 

 

 

Wednesday, September 23, 1992

 

A very nice sunny day. Very cold and windy. Carmen went to town early. Esther went with her. Carmen had to take Cameron to the doctor, he has a cold. I read the paper. We watched programs in p.m. Esther done some odds and end jobs picking up Cliff’s things. Carmen down to Betty’s working this p.m. Vince called this evening to say goodbye. He has a new job with Napa. Getting a raise. He had been working for them before. A very nice young man. He is doing very well on his own. I hope Zak will do as well. Well Henry and Gobble went tonight. David down for coffee this morning.

 

 

 

Thursday, September 24, 1992

 

A nice sunny day. I didn’t do much. Esther up to Dorothea’s to take care of her things. Dorothea here in p.m. Did Billie’s paperwork. Haven’t seen Betty today. I got all the papers read today. B news, Norway advertiser and daily paper. Carmen called this p.m. We got a phone call from Carlton. Phyllis very bad last night. Much worse now. Vince left for home early this morning. Carmen and Brogan to open house for Brogan’s school tonight. Also Brogan joined up for the Daisy group, a branch of Girl Scouts. Been watching some TV programs, the last two nights.

 

 

 

Friday, September 25, 1992

 

A nice sunny day. Esther made a blueberry pie and cookies. I done regular work. Susan and Esther done some errands today. We watched programs this p.m. Billie done chores today. Esther been picking over her letters, papers etc. I haven’t seen Betty or Dorothea all day no Carmen or children. Carmen worked tonight.
