The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 11 - 13, 1992 Zak Moves To California

Friday, September 11, 1992 ZAK LEFT FOR CALIFORNIA

Zac stayed up here last night and up early this morning. He got up and got breakfast. Tom came about 8 and went to Norway to move his things. About 10:30 he began to get ready to move on out. He and Kim got the suitcases packed and Tom helped. At about 12:15 he left with Tom and Kim to go to Portland on the first leg of his journey to California. All gave him a good handshake and hugs for him to leave. I hated to see him go away. I love him just the same as all my other three grandchildren. We will miss him. Dorothea came and got the supper tonight, a good one. I did a lot of washing today. I expect we will hear from Zak within the next 24 hours. I hope.

A nice day, sunny except it was cold and windy. We did not hear from Zak. Well we got the work done up, Dorothea came and cleaned the house, it looks very good. She worked here all day and done a lot. We went up to Carmen’s this p.m. from BJ’s 12th birthday party. A very nice one. A lot of gifts. She was pleased. Dorothea went up with us. Came home, Dorothea got the supper. Then we waited for a call from California. We didn’t get one. May tomorrow. David down for coffee. Billie mowed his lawn.

A nice sunny day. I did up the work. Carmen and kids call this morning. She got some tomatoes. Walt up for coffee. He is quite concerned about not hearing from Zac. And quite disturbed about his truck. I read some papers. Carmen and family gone to Oxford Fair. Zac called this p.m. It was so good to hear his voice. I’m afraid he is a dite homesick. I’d be, that is for sure. He can’t come back. His life will be different, his life will be different from now on out. I know he is different yet smart in many ways. Kind, goodhearted. I’m so sorry for him. I wish he could be helped.
