The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 27 - 30, 1992 Dorothea's 55th Birthday!

 

Monday, July 27, 1992 oil came

 

Foggy and cloudy all day, sun broke through some in p.m. It was quite warm and muggy. We did a big washing today. Esther cooked. She got the supper. It was very good. Carmen, Brogan and Cameron and Betty called this p.m. Brogan was tired today. Susan called in tonight after supper. Betty had a customer today.

 

 

 

Tuesday, July 28, 1992

 

A dite cloudy when I got up, it cleared away. Es made cookies today and a blueberry pie. Carmen and kids called. Betty S and Dorothea to Portland for checkups for Betty’s eyes. She goes August 14. Tomorrow she has got to go down to Dr. Petrone’s office for a physical.

 

 

 

Wednesday, July 29, 1992 Dorothea 55 today

 

After supper we went up to Dorothea’s for her 55th birthday. All of us together chipped in and got her a scanner for her birthday. She likes them so much. Also she got other gifts, money for the antique show at Lake Region High School and many cards. Joy, Betty Smith, Betty Horton, Carmen, Nick, Brogan, Cameron, Esther and I were all there. She was very pleased. Had a good time. A quite nice day in p.m. went to Oxford with Carmen and her kids. Es and Cliff went with Betty H. Tonight we went to the concert with Susan. Betty Smith to Portland about her eyes. Dorothea about her teeth. Betty and Walt on a little vacation trip.

 


 

 

Thursday, July 30, 1992

 

Another one of those partly cloudy days. It was cooler some of the time and kind of muggy some. I had the boy this forenoon. He was kind of fussy. Carmen picked beans. In the evening Susan called and Dorothea after she had gone on her walk. Esther got a good supper. Betty and Walt returned home today. Also up to Lovell for supper.
