The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 8 - 11, 1992

Thursday, October 8, 1992

This has been a sunny hot day. I cleaned the stove over today. Carmen called late in p.m. Brogan too. I got most all the papers read today. Carmen came and got the supper and washed the dishes. Betty had the two children tonight, she and Arnold went to the Fryeburg Fair. I’m glad for Carmen. She works so much at the hospital. Billie hasn’t been out anywhere today except drive out to get the mail. Walt’s truck went tonight to be repaired, about 4:45 PM .

Foggy when we got up. David called in this a.m. for coffee. I didn’t do much. Carmen called this p.m. I had the baby for a half hour this p.m. Dorothea came and got the supper. A red flannel hash. Carmen had a client this p.m. She had to go to work at the hospital. Minnie is going to a nursing home after she is able to leave the hospital. Also Ilan in has got to go too.

It was cloudy in a.m. Around noon it began to break away, blue sky and sun. David came for coffee and talked. Dorothea came and worked hard all day. Cleaned, washed floors, we picked over some things in the box on back porch. She helped Billie with his bath then she washed my hair and put a rinse on. Susan is coming tomorrow to cut it and set it. Betty and Walt worked outside today, cleaned up and harrowed their garden. Brogan called in this a.m. just for a little while. Dorothea washed my hair and put a rinse on. It is quite black. Walt’s brother and his wife Patty came down there this p.m. Rosalie called.

Sunday, October 11, 1992 HAIRCUT and set

This has been such a long lonely day. Kind of on the cloudy very dreary side. Susan came and cut my hair and set it. She done a very good job. Carmen and children were here and BJ for just a minute. They got rest of the apples picked.
