The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A nice sunny morning. I got my work done up and cleaned the stove burners. Washed Kassie’s bed. Then Dorothea and Betty came. Dorothea went to town and did the shopping. It was a nice day, on the quite warm side. The house looks so nice after they got all done. David down for coffee this morning. I did a big wash today.

A quite nice day. The house looks very clean and shiny this morning. Very clean. I done up the regular work then I got ready to do the ironing. Carmen came and set up my ironing board. It took me a long time to do it. Carmen came and helped. She left Cameron here, he was so good then he dropped off to sleep. I also ironed the kitchen curtains which had to be pressed. Carmen went to town to get the things for birthday.

I didn’t do much. I got Brogan’s birthday cards off also Esther’s letter. I went to Ames with Carmen and Cameron. Also to Norway. Carmen began the supper before she went to work. A good tuna casserole she had made. Dorothea dropped in, she did the dishes as Carmen had to go to work. We watched the debate on TV. Bush, Perot and Clinton, they all did well and it was very good.
