The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 25 - 27, 1992 Brogan's First Tooth Fairy Visit

Tuesday, August 25, 1992

A very hot day, it was very humid, first day we have had like this for a long long time. The hurricane is moving into the land off the Gulf of Mexico. A lot of damage has been done. I haven’t done much today. Esther and Susan got to see Cliff this p.m. Carmen had a customer of this p.m. Arnold brought Cameron up early. Carmen to pick him up about 7:30. Dorothea came and helped Billie to get ready to go to the doctor. Susan came and cut Billie’s hair. Betty and Brogan came and cleaned up the house. Arnold and Carmen down to Jacksonbrook to see Nick and to talk with them, the officials. Cliff was sleeping. I washed.

Wednesday, August 26, 1992 HOT HOT

Brogan’s first time at school shopping. Betty, Carmen, Brogan, Cameron and I all went up to North Conway’s shopping mall for Brogan’s first day of school shopping. She was very pleased and excited. Got her some very pretty clothes. Also Carmen got a few clothes for Cameron. A nice day except very hot. Cliff not very good. I feel so sorry for him.

Thursday, August 27, 1992 FIRST TOOTH GONE

Well today Brogan lost her first tooth and the tooth fairy came and took it. She left her one dollar for it. Brogan stayed up here all night. A Durham calf was born here last night down in the pasture. Attendance and assistance were David, Carmen and Betty. They had to help her. She had been trying all day to have it. Very pretty dark red and white head. Dorothea, Esther, Billie and I were on the porch. Also Brogan saw the birth of the calf last night. She was there, her first one. It was foggy and cloudy most all day. Sun came out after a while.
