The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 4 - 6, 1996 Cliff has a Stroke

Tuesday, August 4, 1992

Cloudy and showers. Bad thunder showers in some place. Worse in other parts of the state than here. Well Esther and Cliff went with Susan, Billie to Portland today to see where Monica and Susan will be going to school this next year. Then when they got home all out to supper. Cliff’s treat supposedly. They all paid for their own dinner. Got home at about 9 PM. Lorraine was here today and brought us a picture of her family. It is nice and I like it very much. I washed. Carmen came, got the supper tonight. Arnold and Nick were here also. Because of the storms Betty and Walt didn’t go on their trip.

Thursday, August 6, 1992 Cliff had a bad stroke

A very nice sunny morning, on the cool side. We got the work done. Esther made a lemon pie. I looked at the rest of the coronas. Cliff took a shower. About 8:30 or 9 AM Cliff sat down to eat his breakfast. He had a bad stroke. Called the ambulance. They took him to the hospital. He was very bad. They all stayed with him all day. Also back again tonight. No improvement today. We all are very shook up. It has changed their plans for going home very much.
