The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 25 - 27, 1990 Christmas

Tuesday, December 25, 1990 A NICE DAY AT CARMEN’S

A very nice day (cold). We had Christmas at Carmen’s today and a delicious bountiful dinner. Turkey, roast pork, turkey, onions, mashed potato, turnip, celery, relish, shell beans. Very good. Guests: Walt, Betty, Dorothea, David, Fern, Betty S, Tom, Kim, Billie, Jeff, Zack, Brogan and me. We enjoyed seeing Carmen and Brogan and Zac have their tree then over to Kim’s for their tree. Then the delicious meal. Then to Betty and Walt’s and they opened their gifts. Got home. Billie had to leave to go back to Portland for rest of the week. Then they disfigured my Christmas tree and cleaned it all up and everything back to normal. Then I relaxed.

A quite nice day. I got up alone, Kassie and I. We had breakfast. I done up the work. Picked over my desk drawers. Got some things taken care of. Carmen and Brogan came about 10 o’clock. She did the chores then went home to clean her house up. BJ played with her. Carmen came and got the supper. Betty called this p.m. Also again at suppertime. A man came to see about building me some shelves on the breezeway. Also the furnace stopped today. I called them, they sent a man right up, it had to have a new motor.

It was kind of a cloudy day. I done some puttering jobs then I read some papers. I done up regular work than I washed. Carmen and Brogan came, Carmen had to go to Windham. Bro stayed with me. Betty got a call from the hospital rehab center and they can’t get the right kind of nurse up here for him. So wanted to know if we could get him back and forth down there. We can’t do that so they said they would see if anything could be worked out. Carmen was sick this p.m. so she couldn’t come to get supper. So we call Zack, he came and got the supper. Did all the dishes and cleaned up.
