The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

YEAR END REVIEW

Betty very sick in the Bridgton and Portland hospital. Later in the year Dorothea had a bad bad attack of the (blank). She was so bad. Had to take a very powerful medication, she got better. George left in January (18). The kids like their new home very much. Betty and Joy had operations this past year early. Jack and Sylvia visited us first time of the year. We went out to dinner with them one day, George and I.

Kim got acquainted with a very nice young man on the Bridgton police force. Betty entertained all her kids and their friends at a supper the first of the year.

Well Zack has had a very unsettling year. One thing after another went wrong. He has been in New York State, Vermont, New Hampshire and Washington DC. I’m sorry nothing worked out for him, hope in the future and soon his life will take a turn for the better. I love him no matter what.

Billie had a shock in April. He was in NCM hospital a while, came home and had therapist come. They helped him a lot. He wasn’t much good at work all summer. Late this fall another bad one, in the Portland Rehabilitation a long time. Improved some, still got to get therapy at home.

A busy summer at camp, cookouts etc. Betty made big improvements at her home on Stearn’s Lake.

This past year Dorothea made improvements to her home. Es and Cliff came for two weeks this summer. Dorothea had us all at her place for pictures and a visit. Dorothea got better of her skin problem. Carmen off on a trip to Belfast and around. Kim and Tom had a nice summer and a nice trip up to New Hampshire. Billie had a cataract removed this summer. I did too. We both got new glasses. Carmen met several men this past summer. One at Fryeburg Fair. I wish could be a catch for her.

Billie raised two beef this year, one to eat. Dot Smith had a heart attack and a bad shock this fall.

Two boys born to the family. Kathy Smith and Amy Smith, a girl to Lori. Susan and Monica out to Chris’s graduation in Ohio, Norton High of Barberton. Esther and Cliff here this summer.

David had operation, kidney stones, very sick. So many are sick, so much every year. Hope this year will be free of family sickness.

Also late this fall we went to see Donny. He is in a home in Farmington Maine. He looks so good. It worth a million to see him again. I loved, and still do, that child. Now he is older 42 years. We had nice Thanksgiving and Christmas.
