The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 25 - 28, 1969

Sunday, October 25, 1969

Partly cloudy. Most all day. It cleared about dark. I did up my regular work, made rolls. Bill set out the trees today and shrubbery. Billie worked for Lawrence. I went down to Betty’s. I washed her storm windows. Walt put them on. Carmen and Kim outside all day. Fern, Es and Cliff down to Betty and Walt’s for supper and evening. Snow most all melted. Tonight ends daylight saving time.

A dreary day. Billie and I cleaned the cars up. In p.m. we went down to Fern and Lloyd’s for supper. Had a most delicious meal. Roast beef, salad, peas, mashed potatoes, good brown gravy. Hot rolls, pumpkin pie and a delicious chocolate cake. Es and Cliff went down to Dorothea and Dave’s. Billie and I called at Betty and Walt, then we came home.

Monday, October 27, 1969

I washed, done up the work, made a custard pie and apple. Got out a bunch of T-bone steaks for supper. Es, Cliff, Fern, Betty, Walt and family here for supper. It cleared today. We cooked the steaks out on the grill. They were delicious. No school today. Walt didn’t have to work. Armistice Day was observed. Es up today to visit.

A nice day. Esther came up. She made another one of those delicious chocolate cakes. We had a pork chop supper. We went to Norway in forenoon to do some shopping etc. Went down through to Casco, called at Frances and Herman’s.
