The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 12 - 14, 1969


Friday, December 12, 1969

A nice day, not too cold. I did a little washing, did up my regular work, ironed, wrapped a few more gifts. Got ready, went down to Betty’s. We got ready, went to Norway. I did rest of my shopping. Came home. Kim here for a little while. Betty took me to town to do my shopping (groceries). After supper Billie and I got Zak ‘s stroller. Then we went to Norway. Billie got his new jacket. He got me some gifts at Longley’s etc. Fern went with us. Came home, took the stroller down to Zak.



Saturday, December 13, 1969 Betty had a new dryer come

A nice day. I done up my work. Billie worked for Lawrence. I made rolls and a cake. Billie and I went over to Fryeburg in a.m. Betty and Walt had a new dryer come today. Dawn and husband down to Betty’s for supper. Fern up here. After supper we went to Dorothea’s. Bill, Fern and I. We had a nice school picture of Billie Deming today. I got a Christmas card from Mrs. Drew with $5.00 check in it. Billie had a surprise phone call from his friends (Army buddy) tonight from North Carolina. Roundtree. He was very pleased to hear from him.

A pretty good day. I didn’t get up until 10 AM. Done up my work. Bill helped Walt hook up the new clothes dryer. I went down to Betty’s. Dorothea and family called. Was to Betty’s for supper. Fern, Lloyd called here today for a little while. Billie worked for Chet and Lawrence today. Walt and Betty got their Christmas tree and Dorothea and Dave got one too down in the pasture.
