The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 14 - 17, 1970

Wednesday, January 14, 1970 Put hair rinse on

Cold and in middle of the day the wind began to blow. It blowed very hard. I did up my work, made a meat pie and a carrot cake. I went down to Betty’s in p.m. She had company, coupled girls she used to go to school with. I washed my hair and put a rinse on. Gordon, Sal called this evening.

Thursday, January 15, 1970  6 below

A cold windy morning. I did regular work. Did a dite of cooking. Went down to Betty’s to stay with the kids while she did her shopping. Had a pea soup for supper. Billie did his grocery shopping tonight.

Friday, January 16, 1970

A nice day. I washed, did up my work. Got ready, went to town with Fern, Lloyd. Dot Laffin went too. I paid car excise taxes, paid a bill while I was down there. I didn’t go grocery shopping tonight.

Saturday, January 17, 1970

A nice mild day. A real January thaw. I did my regular work. We went to town. I came home, made rolls, bread and a squash pie. Baked white beans, very good. Washed windows. Down to Betty’s to babysit while they went to town. Came home, had supper. Bill and I called at Gordon’s.
