The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 30 - December 3, 1969


Sunday, November 30, 1969

Bill and I took a ride. Billie down to Lawrence’s. We went over to Waterford, up to the pumping station. Out to the Albany town house on the Bethel Road, over to Sweden, East Stoneham, Lovell, West Stoneham and back to Lovell to an and him being to and I got to number four and out through Fern (?) Home. Came home, Betty’s family was here. We had a Turkey leftover supper.



Monday, December 1, 1969

I washed. It was cloudy and snow flurries in a.m. but it cleared ,my clothes dried. I went down to Betty’s. Kim came up to watch her programs. Their TV went off Sat. Betty and I went to Norway to swap some of the slippers Billie and I got for the right sizes etc. Fern stayed with Zak.



Tuesday, December 2, 1969 Bills eye is bad

A pretty good day, some cloudy, on the cold side. I ironed, did regular work. Kim came up and watched her programs. Kim up this morning to watch TV.



Wednesday, December 3, 1969 Permanent

Cloudy. Betty took me over to June’s. I got a new permanent $9.50. Lloyd came and got me. It snowed off and on today. Cold. I made a pie and tarts tonight. Had some delicious baked beans, some Billie got down to Lloyd Trueworthy’s at Porter. White kidney beans.
