The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 22 - 25, 1969


Sunday, November 22, 1969

Clear and very cold. I was at Betty’s all day and until midnight. They went to Kings and done rest of the shopping. Jeff is having a good time and Carmen too. Billie worked for Lawrence today.



Sunday, November 23, 1969

A pretty good day. We got up about eight. I done up the work. Billie worked for Lawrence getting the cattle home from pasture. Bill and I took a ride up to Stoneham Maine and Chatham New Hampshire. Came home, got supper. Dorothea and family called at Betty’s in evening.



Monday, November 24, 1969 A light covering of snow

30°. Cold. Snow on the ground this morning. It cleared off quite cold. I washed, done up regular work. Sent check to Dr. Cornelius. Sent check to CM Power Company. Sent a small order to Spencer. I went down to Betty’s for a little while. Astronauts Apollo 12 came back today. Robert called here a minute today, he was hunting. Bill brought home the turkey from the Dielectric tonight, a big one.



Tuesday, November 25, 1969

A nice day. I done up my work. Did a dite of cooking. I did my ironing. Called at Betty’s. She and the children went to Portland to meet Walt. They had their pictures taken. After supper Billie and I called at Walt and Betty’s and at Fern’s. Billie brought home the turkey tonight for dinner tomorrow.
