The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 4 - 7, 1969

Thursday, December 4, 1969

Teen temperatures this morning. Partly cloudy. I washed, washed windows, made two squash pies. Down to Betty’s while she went to do her Christmas shopping. Kim came up in forenoon to watch TV. She is a cute little tyke. Bill home for his lunch. His eyes are bad.

Friday, December 5, 1969 Nice day

A nice snow last night. Clear and cold. Kim up to watch her TV programs. Bill’s eye about the same. I went down to Betty’s to make plans to go shopping tomorrow, came home, ironed, cleaned my kitchen stove. To town after supper.

Saturday, December 6, 1969 New Color TV

Clear and very cold. Today Betty and Walt bought a brand-new colored TV Motorola. Betty and I to Portland today and Falmouth shopping for Christmas. Not very good luck, stores are crowded, people have pawed and picked everything over. I’ll be so glad when it is over. Is awfully hard work to shop. I still got more to do.

Checking out the new color tv!

Sunday, December 7, 1969

A real nice day. I done up my work. Read paper etc. Went down to Betty’s while they went down town. I like their TV very much. I’m so glad they have it. Billie worked for Lawrence. Bill and I went for a short ride, called at Fern and Lloyd’s. I had a roast beef supper. Billie home early. I went down to Hortons to watch colored TV.
