The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 26 - 29, 1969


Wednesday, November 26, 1969

It was cloudy in a.m. but it warmed up and cleared off. I finished my cooking. Kim and Zak up today. Betty very busy getting ready to go to Walt’s home for Thanksgiving tomorrow. A nice day. In evening Joy, Buddy and girls called. They brought Jeff up for Thanksgiving tomorrow.



Thursday, November 27, 1969 Thanksgiving Day

A beautiful day. It has been a very nice day, not too cold. Betty and Walt got started about 9 AM. They all looked very nice when they left. I done up regular work. Jeff seems to be enjoying being here. He is a goodhearted fellow. Aunt Ava came about 10:30. I got dinner, we all enjoyed the dinner very much. Fern and Lloyd called in evening. Also Dorothea and Dave came to get Jeff. I was so glad Jeff was here. Turkey, gravy, mashed potato, squash, shell beans, onions, cranberry sauce, pickles, celery, rolls, Graham nut bread, pumpkin bread (Betty’s), date filled, lemon sponge and apple pie and chocolate cake. All very good.

Friday, November 28, 1969

A nice day, on the cool side. Billie and I went to Norway, we did some Christmas shopping (Billie’s). Shoes, slippers etc., a very pretty pull down lamp for Dorothy and Dave. We went to Bridgton in p.m. and done grocery shopping etc.



Saturday, November 29, 1969

On the cold side. I baked a double batch of beans. I done up regular work. Fern up for supper. Gordon came up in PM. In a.m. Bill and Gordon got piped down to Lakeside plumbing for outside pipe to the oil barrel. In p.m. he and Billie put it in. Horton family got home about 4:30. Came up here for supper.
