The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 8 - 11, 1969

Monday, December 8, 1969

A cold cloudy stormy day. It snowed and it rained. I didn’t wash. I cleaned up my bedrooms today, moved the beds. I wrapped some gifts. Went down to Betty’s and watched colored TV. Soap operas very good. Came home, did a dite more wrapping, got supper. Billie’s eye not too good. They told him at Dialectic they will get a small bonus this year and a canned ham.

Tuesday, December 9, 1969

Another cloudy rainy day. I done up my work, made a pie. Got my Christmas cards stamped and mailed all of mine and Billie’s out-of-town ones. Down to Betty’s. I helped her get her applesauce made. Watched a couple TV shows, very good. They like their TV very much. I had a box come today with a couple Christmas gifts. Also the pencils I sent for came.

Wednesday, December 10, 1969

A cloudy day but mild. Betty and I went to Norway town in a.m. In p.m. went to Bridgton. I got almost all my shopping done. Just a few more things to get. Fern stayed with Zak and Kim. Betty finished all her shopping.

Thursday, December 11, 1969 Couch Pillows Back

It rained hard and heavy winds most all day. I did some more Christmas wrapping. Went down to Betty’s while she went to town. Came home and wrapped a few more gifts. Carmen came up and brought up the turkey that Betty and Walt got free with the purchase of their new colored TV. We put it in our deep-freeze. I went down to Ferns in evening while Billie went to get his haircut. Billie brought the pillows back tonight for the coach. Very mild temperature. Bill called out after supper to get a tree out of the road on the Ridge.
