The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 1 - 4, 1970


Thursday, January 1, 1970

A beautiful day. Sunny, not too cold. I didn’t get up too early. Got breakfast, done up my work, got ready went down to Fern’s and watched Rose Bowl Parade on colored TV. I wore my new blue dress. Bill called at Betty and Walt’s. Then came after me. Fern and I called Esther and family. Came home, got supper, made a cake. Walt called, got rest of my turkey pie. Billie downtown, got the paper. Fern, Lloyd up in evening. We had coffee, cheese, crackers, cake and ice cream.



Friday, January 2, 1970 Oil

A very nice day. I washed, went to town with Lloyd. Did shopping. Betty not very good. Carmen and Kim up here. Bill and I down town as soon as supper to get pills and paid Joe Hatch. We had 100 gallons oil today. Kennard called. I went down to see Betty when the kids went home.



Saturday, January 3, 1970

A beautiful day. I got up at 7 AM. Did up my work, washed windows. Lloyd came for trash. Walt came up in a.m. I made bread and rolls. Baked white kidney beans. Fern down to (?) Ferns for supper. Billie worked for Lawrence. Bill relaxed all day.



Sunday, January 4, 1970

A very nice day. I done up my work. Called at Betty’s a little while. She didn’t seem very good, her eye I guess. No one here all day.
