The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Snowing when we got up. Bill called to work at about 10 AM. Billie gone down country with Lawrence to get cattle. I made sloppy Joe’s for supper. Cleared during the day, only skiff of snow.

I went with Betty. I stayed at Dorothea’s while she went to an eye doctor in Portland. He didn’t think her eye is at all good, he wants her to go to a specialist in Boston. Got home at 3 PM. Dorothea glad we came down. I took care of kids at Dorothea’s.

Tuesday, January 20, 1970

A nice day, on the cold side. I washed, hung the clothes outside, they dried pretty good. I cleaned up the house etc. Fern, Lloyd called a little while.

Friday, January 23, 1970 BROWNIE MEETING

16 below this morning. It clouded up. It began to spit snow at about 11 AM. I did regular work. Washed, dried clothes in the house. Washed and waxed kitchen floor. School bus was late. Lida Brackett took her kids, Randy and Carmen to school. Carmen goes to her first Brownie meeting tonight after school. She is so pleased. Betty ran into a door this morning.
