The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 31 - June 3, 1969


Saturday, May 31, 1969

Another beautiful day. I did a dite of cooking. Betty and Walt gone most of the day. In late p.m. they took the kids over to Bob’s to play with Debbie and Laurie. Fern, Lloyd here for supper. Buddy, Joy and girls here after supper. They played Jarts with Bill, Betty and Walt. Billie worked for Lawrence. They went picking up cattle.



Sunday, June 1, 1969

A very nice day. We did up the work. Made preparations for a cookout. Bill and I went down to Sebago with Walt and Betty to see the lot Walt wants to buy. Fern and Lloyd called. Mike called to see his daughters Carmen and Kimberly.



Monday, June 2, 1969 Permanent, Peas are up

It was partly cloudy. I got my spring permanent today. Betty did up the work and washed. I cooked veal chops for supper. Peas up.



Tuesday, June 3, 1969

Cloudy, some showers. It cleared in late p.m. Betty and I took Kim to Dr. Mathews for a checkup. Came home early. Called at Dorothea’s on the way. Also stopped at the store. Carmen down to Ferns to wait for us ???? Tonight Billie and I called at Aunt Ava’s a little while.
