The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 15 - 18, 1969 New Bikes

Thursday, May 15, 1969 Set out some more shrubbery

A very nice day. We got ready and went to Raymond and down through Windham and to Dorothea’s. Home at about noon, got Carmen, ate lunch and went to Standish and out to South Portland. We bought some shrubbery. They set the shrubbery out. Walt very late getting home.

Friday, May 16, 1969 $5.00   BIKES

A real nice sunny hot day. I worked at Dorothy’s. In p.m. we went to Norway, bought two bikes for kids. Carmen was speechless when she saw her new bike. A red one, also Kimmy was very pleased and happy. We did regular work.

Saturday, May 17, 1969 HOT 90°

It has been a very hot day, windows, doors all open. Bill mowed lawns for the first time. Billie hauled the manure for the garden. We did up the housework. I cooked today. A very hot day. Everything growed today. Carmen and Kim enjoyed their bikes today. I picked over dandelions greens Minnie gave us. I put a rinse on my hair after I shampooed it. Fern up for supper. Billie worked for Lawrence.

A miserable day, rained hard most all day. They did the garage floor. Cemented. Myron Fitch and his crew did it. A very good job. Fern and Lloyd called in evening.
