The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 23 - 26, 1969


Friday, May 23, 1969 $5.00

Hot in forenoon. I worked at Dorothy’s in a.m. It got real hot. I walked home. In p.m. Betty, kids and I went to South Windham. Got a post for garage. Also went to Douglasville, Sebago, looked at a lot of land Betty and Walt are interested in buying. Then on down to Standish, White Rock, and Gorham. Back to South Windham, got the post, looked at a small house there. Came home, had scallops for supper. Bill and I to town after supper. I got my groceries in p.m. Bill set up the post in garage. Walt home early.



Saturday, May 24, 1969

Another one of those dreary miserable days. Rain, cloudy. Billie and I over to Norway and got garden seed and plants. Billie and I to town, got some groceries and gas. Betty did up the work. I washed out a few clothes. Kim was sick last night. Billie up to Chet’s and down to Lawrence. Walt home about 2:30. Kids in all day, it is cold. I did a dite of cooking.



Sunday, May 25, 1969

Clear but quite cold. We was busy. Had a chicken supper. Walt and Betty down to Dawn’s.



Monday, May 26, 1969

I did some washing. We went to Dorothea’s, North Windham, looked at a couple places. We came home, did rest of the washing and I ironed. Betty went to the hospital to see Mrs. Parker.
