The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 22 - 24, 1969 Carmen Begins School in Bridgton

Tuesday, April 22, 1969

Mostly cloudy today. I dite of sunshine. I cleaned the living room and most of the kitchen. Went to Dr. Cornelius for a checkup or physical. All okay. Bill put on some more blinds and painted some on the ends of the house. I got the curtains back from the cleaners and I up. Raining tonight. Aunt Ava called a minute, brought the paper back.

Wednesday, April 23, 1969

Another miserable day. It rained hard and it rained awful hard all night and the wind blowed so hard. The ground was all flooded this morning. Betty and kids came about 11. I finished the kitchen. Betty went down town to the school and she enrolled Carmen. Aunt Ava didn’t have any water, her pump got flooded. Kids were pleased to be here. Betty is glad to be moving.

Thursday, April 24, 1969 Carmen began school here today

Another miserable day. Bill and I worked down cellar all day. The cellar looked real good all painted over on the walls. It has been a cold miserable rainy day. I did some on the breezeway but it was so cold I couldn’t wash the windows. Carmen began school here today. She will finish her school year out here.
