The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, January 29, 1994 HAIR SET, ZAK WORKING

A nice clear day and sunny. I did washing this morning. Carmen came and took care of them. Last night Brogan stayed all night. It is nice having her around. Today Susan came and shampooed my hair, put on a rinse and set it. Zak home today. Walt went down to Portland and got him. He is now working at the airport. I hope it will be a good long job and he will do well. Betty got supper tonight. Zak was here and did the dishes. She and Walt had beans. She brought us up some. Very good brown bread.

Carmen brought up some new drapes for living room. I like them. In p.m. Betty brought up some other tape to watch. Dorothea came and got the supper. A good one. A quite long day. I did a dite of washing. Carmen took care of it. I wrote to Esther. My legs are still lame.

We are having some nice sunny days now. Still awful cold. My legs are a nuisance. Hard to get around. Carmen came, cleaned up the house, did some washing and other errands. Cameron was with her. It had been some time since we have seen him. He is a cute kid. Betty came up, got the supper. She had been to the dentist. He fixed her tooth up for her. Walt took Zak back to Portland where he works at the airport. Betty got the supper tonight, very good.

At last after a long cold stormy month and all that goes with it, February is here. I hope the weather pattern changes. Carmen here and done her work this morning. David came and had coffee. Made a good visit. I’m a lot better this morning. My legs don’t bother me as they have these past three days. Betty having trouble with her tooth. Walt took her to the dentist early. She didn’t sleep all night, it was awful. Carmen worked at the hospital all night. Tom plowed.
