The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Tuesday, December 28, 1993

 

Very cold today. Some wind. Carmen came and did her work. David came this morning and had coffee. Carmen took Billie for therapy today. Tom called for a minute. Betty’s company went home early this p.m. They came to Walt’s today to get the furnace set up. They got to come again tomorrow. Betty came, got the supper. She had her Christmas dinner. Very good. I didn’t do much today.

 


 

 

Wednesday, December 29, 1993

 

Sunny in a.m. In late p.m. it began to cloud up, snow began at about dark. It’s snowed quite hard till morning. I did a dite of washing. Carmen came and done her duties. Betty came, get the supper. Brogan was sick, 101 ½ temperature. Today the plumber came and worked at Walt’s. Supposed to come and finish it tomorrow. Water pipes froze up to the shelter. It was a mess. Nice thank you note from Kim and Tom.

 

 

 

Thursday, December 30, 1993

 

Some sun. I didn’t do much, trying to get some of the papers done. I did. I did a dite of wash this morning. Carmen came. She got the fudge made today. She had customers also Brogan down to Betty’s all day. She and Brogan went to Portland to get Zak.
