The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, December 11, 1993

 

Cloudy and rain. David came for coffee. Zak came. Carmen came, did her work. I got all Christmas cards off today. Carmen and family going to Lewiston to get BJ. Also exchange the shirts etc. Well BJ didn’t come, she is sick. Will come later. Brogan at Betty’s tonight. She is going to help them get their tree in and decorated. Carmen got home at about 5 PM. She got supper. I wrote Esther today.

 

 

 

Sunday, December 12, 1993

 

A nice sunny day after the rain and snow of last night. I cut some clippings out of the paper I want to see later. Carmen came, did her work. Walt up for coffee. Zak came up later for coffee, in p.m. he brought up a tape for me to watch but I had seen the movie earlier. Brogan to Sunday school. Then in p.m. she helped to decorate the tree at Betty’s. It got colder as the day got longer. Dorothea came, got the supper. It was very good. She played a tape picture. Carmen and kids up to Dorothea’s in evening.

 






 

 

Monday, December 13, 1993

 

Well I haven’t done much today as usual. I got the mail ready to go. Carmen done her regular work, went to town and post office for me. Zak to Portland and done some copying for Walt. Betty up and got the supper. Also cleaned up good. It has rained today and a dite of sunshine.

 

 

 

Tuesday, December 14, 1993

 

A cloudy day all day. Well Betty and Carmen came, also called Kim and all of them together got the tree in and decorated. It is beautiful. Then in p.m. Betty and Carmen did all the wrapping. What a good job to get that all done. It rained all p.m. Walt up for supper, also the kids were here at supper time. Billie over to North Bridgton to the therapist.
