The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 18 - 21, 1994

Tuesday, January 18, 1994

Well at last we had a clear sunny day. It was still very cold except middle temps during middle of p.m. It didn’t last long. It got cold again. The daily paper didn’t get delivered until late p.m. because of the bad storm. No school today. Also many businesses shut down. I did a few odd and end jobs. Carmen came and did her work. I worked on puzzle this p.m. Got quite a bit of it done. We went to pick up the table, it collapsed and went flying. So I’m not going to do it again until later. Betty came and got the supper. Tom plowed, Arnold shoveled. Earthquakes are still rumbling in California. I wouldn’t live out there for all they got in the state. A lot of destruction and expense. It was awful.

Very cold again. I didn’t do much. Carmen came, did her work. David came for coffee. Watched TV soaps in p.m. Betty came up a minute. She put the ham in today. We baked bread today. Carmen took Brogan to the dentist, had her teeth cleaned and checked. They worked at Betty and Walt’s putting in the water filter system. Kids here at supper time. They are made known.

20 below here this morning. Colder in many other places. It was too cold. In places power is out. I did wash and Kassie’s bed. Carmen came and took care of clothes. I got Billie’s lunch. Betty poorly. Has been for some time. Betty Smith doing better.

Cold all day. Carmen came and did her work, cleaned up the house and done the things she had to. Washed etc. I done some reading. Billie took a bath. I took mine. In forenoon I called Esther. It was nice talking to her. She isn’t up to pace yet. In awful pain in her back when she gets up or down. Dorothea came, got the supper. Made some dessert. Carmen made a chocolate pudding. David called in this morning. I had coffee for him.
