The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 23 - 25, 1991 Billie's Party

 

Saturday, March 23, 1991

 

A mostly cloudy day with snow beginning at about 3 PM. David down this morning and made a good long visit. We are celebrating Billie’s birthday with a supper tonight. Betty and family except Zack. Dorothea and Betty S, Brogan and her friends and Arnold and Betty S also David came. A very good baked bean supper. Betty bakes good beans and her brown bread is just like mamas. This family is lucky to have someone that can make rolls so light and perfectly delicious. It is Carmen. And Betty’s brown bread. All are such good cooks.

 




 

 

Sunday, March 24, 1991

 

SNOW SNOW all day. It made a very gloomy day. Walt up for coffee. Carmen called a little while. Not much going on here today. Betty brought up Italians for our supper.

 

 

 

Monday, March 25, 1991

 

Well a mostly cloudy day. I took a bath and got ready to go to the doctors for my throat. It so far is just called laryngitis. Billie took his bath too. Carmen came at about 11:30. She worked last night till 7 AM. She took me to the doctor. She is so helpful and kind. Too bad I have to be so dependent on her and all rest of them. It is a nuisance for them. I did the washing today.
