The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Friday, April 26, 1991

 

A very nice sunny warm day. It was solid sun all day. I got up, cleaned the oven. I cleaned all the silverware and I done the washing. Went to Auburn with Carmen and Brogan. Gone until about noon. I did the ironing. Betty here, she settled the porch. The floor all dried and it looks very good. Carmen going to the movies, took Nice, Billie Jo and Brogan. Betty H and Betty Smith called in here for a little while. Carmen got the windows all washed on the outside.

 

 

 

Saturday, April 27, 1991

 

A quite nice day. Got cooler in p.m. I was on the porch all day. I read the papers, got them all done. Carmen and Arnold went and got a kitten for Betty up to Rockland. She is going to give Joy for her birthday. Betty had Brogan, Nick and Billie Jo all day. Betty came up and got our supper. She, Brogan and Walt were here for supper. David down this morning for coffee. Carmen worked till 11 PM. Kim gone to Portland today.

 

 

 

Sunday, April 28, 1991

 

At last I heard from Zac. He called. He is okay, working in a parking lot near WCSH TV. I made out the bills today. Walt up for coffee.

 

 

 

Monday, April 29, 1991

 

A quite nice day, warm. I done regular work. Then I cleaned my aluminum dishes. Also did my washing. Cleaned refrigerator, wiped it out. Carmen had cleaned it. Carmen came about 11 AM, wanted to know if I’d like to go to Auburn with her. I did. She picked up some more of Brogan’s pictures. Then we went to Kmart. Carmen got some things for me. They came home. She got supper and had to go to work at 11 PM til 7 AM tomorrow. Zac talked with Walt today.
