The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 16 - 19, 1991

 

Saturday, February 16, 1991 Betty Smith home from hospital

 

Very cold. Walt gone all day. He wouldn’t tell Betty where Zac is. I done up regular work. David here for coffee this morning. Dorothea went to Norway and got Betty Smith. She is glad the operation is over and so glad to get home. I talked with her. I did a dite of washing. Dorothea called this p.m. It has been a nice sunny day, but very cold.

 

 

 

Sunday, February 17, 1991 Betty Louise Horton 48 years today

 

Cloudy when we got up. Walt up for coffee. I got the meals today and yesterday. Zac not at home yet. Bro up to Dorothea and David’s while they were out. Up to Charlene’s for supper. Carmen, Arnold, Betty and Walt.

 

 

Monday, February 18, 1991

 

It dawned sunny and fair. I did my washing. Carmen and Brogan came. Carmen and Arnold gone to get bedding over to Fryeburg. Jason came and did a dite of shoveling. Betty called a little while this evening. She is doing quite well. She had a nice birthday. No word from Zac.

 

 

 

Tuesday, February 19, 1991 cloudy, snow and rain

 

Well, I done up my work, got Betty Milne and George’s letters off, also wrote to Esther. Walt gone out today.
