The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 20 - 23, 1960 New Car



Thursday, October 20, 1960

A cloudy rainy day. Cold. I churned and cooked. Made a cake for Fern CHOC. In evening Bill and I took it down. Betty to FHA Halloween party. Bill took her down. Tonight he came home in a 1956 Plymouth green. Very pretty from Roger McDonald. Tried out a PLYMOUTH . Betty home all this past week every night.



Friday, October 21, 1960 Fern 58

Cleared off but cold. I washed today. Betty went to school in the new car with Bill this morning. Betty sent a letter to Dorothea.



Saturday, October 22, 1960 1956 Car

We got our new 1956 Plymouth car tonight, very pretty. Bought it of Roger McDonald’s. Betty and Mike got up late for breakfast. He came from Auburn last night and stayed here all night. He is a very good boy and I can trust him.



Sunday, October 23, 1960

Nice in a.m. Blanche called and asked me to go to Wilton with her also Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis went. Had a good dinner and time. Began to rain before we got home. Rained hard all night. Fern, Lloyd, Kennie, Dot and Bob here today. Blanche stayed here for supper. Billie bought a cow at Paris Hill today. She will come next week. Betty went with some other kids and took Mike home.
