The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 5 - 8, 1961



Thursday, January 5, 1961 Letter from Adair’s

A nice day, a little cold and windy. I washed, cleaned up my chambers and ironed after supper. Raymond here for supper. Dolores up here in a.m. Dot and Lorraine here in p.m. Also Wanda Jean.



Friday, January 6, 1961

A pretty good day, not too cold. I cleaned up the downstairs, churned, washed windows. Dolores called. Aunt Ava also. Betty, Billie and Mama got a letter from Dorothea. Got Es letter today too. Betty to town tonight. She expects Mike to come up from Auburn. Bill and I to town grocery shopping. Betty got a letter from her Uncle George Crook thanking her for her nice picture. Also that is what Dorothea wrote to her.




Saturday, January 7, 1961

A very nice day. I cooked, done up the work. In p.m. Bill fixed his tractor body. Billie and Raymond hauled hay. Raymond here for supper. In evening I went to the Rebecca supper with Dolores. Mike came up tonight, he and Betty to movies. Back here for all night.




Sunday, January 8, 1961

A very nice warm day. Got up late, done up the work. Betty, Billie, Blanche and I took Mike home to Auburn. Had a nice ride. He gave us his picture. Very good. He is a swell guy. Fern, Lloyd, Kennie and Dot here today.
