The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 9 - 12, 1960

Friday, December 9, 1960 cold

Zero this morning. I went to town with Lloyd. Came home, cleaned up the downstairs. Washed some windows (kitchen). In p.m. backed a few Christmas cards. Betty home early from school. Rowena came up, they have gone skating over to North Bridgton with Randy Harmon and other North Bridgton kids. To town in evening. A nice day but cold all day.

Saturday, December 10, 1960

Zero temperatures. I cooked, done up the housework. Bill and Billie worked outside and in the barn in p.m. Betty did not go to town tonight. Had a good supper.

Sunday, December 11, 1960 Cold

A nice day, awful cold. Bill and Betty hauled wood with the tractor. In p.m. I went down with them, way down in lower lot, we got the Christmas tree. Hauled it up on the tractor. Was it ever cold. Zero temperature. Poor Lassie hurt her foot awful bad.

Monday, December 12 1960s SNOW

A very bad snowstorm. The first one of the year. A real blizzard. Very cold and high winds. I didn’t wash, I just worked on cards, Betty’s pictures etc. Lassie’s foot not too good.
