The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 1 - 4, 1960 Paid Taxes



Tuesday, November 1, 1960

Rain all day. Bill home all day. He put the tires on the tractor. I churned 2 pounds butter in evening. Bill, Betty and I took a dozen eggs down to Jean. Betty drove part the way. Billie had to work again tonight. Dr. Nash had doctor.



Wednesday, November 2, 1960

A very nice day. I washed kitchen curtains and windows. In p.m. Blanche called and asked me to go to Pownal to see Donnie. I went, also we went down and got Betty, she went too.



Thursday, November 3, 1960

I washed. Got clothes in and ironed after supper. I also cleaned up my chambers today. Dr. Nash paid $33. I washed living room curtains. Rowena and Linda here tonight.



Friday, November 4, 1960

Quite cold and windy all day. I went to town in a.m. with Lloyd. We paid the taxes. Came home, did a lot of other jobs. Blanche Davenport called in p.m. In evening I went to town again with Bill. Betty downtown. Mike came over to Bridgton tonight. He and Betty to the movies. Milan stayed here all night. Dr. Nash paid $47. Betty up to the eye doctor’s tonight after school.
