The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 24 - 25, 1960 Christmas



Saturday, December 24, 1960 12 below this morning

A very cold day. I cooked in a.m. and Betty helped me do up the housework. In p.m. Billie and I to town and over to Aunt Ava’s and Ferns. Aunt Ava came over in p.m. to see tree. Fern came in evening, also George and Thena called. Bill and Billie’s cars wouldn’t start. Billie got a Holstein bull calf at Lawrence’s today. Mike came tonight. He and Betty exchange their gifts. He was much pleased with everything and especially her picture. Mike gave her a very pretty skirt and sweater which she liked very much. Mike looked very nice tonight. Had a Christmas party where Bill works. Our tree very pretty tonight.






Sunday, December 25, 1960 Zero

A very nice day. Had a very nice Christmas. We all got a lot of nice gifts. Kennie, Dot, Fern, Lloyd, Bob and Blanche here for dinner. In evening Mike came also Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis called. Betty and Mike downtown after supper. Mike stayed all night. Kennie helped to get dinner. Bob and Billie helped do dinner dishes. We talked with Esther and family. Joy and Ronald called. Turkey, roast pork, potato, gravies, shell beans, squash, onions, salad, rolls, Graham nut bread. Custard pie, date filled, cake, ice cream, cherry (?) cake. Cranberry sauce. Raymond called in a.m.
