The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 20 - 23, 1960



Sunday, November 20, 1960 Got wood

A nice day. Bill got his tractor to going. He and Billie got some wood up to Chet’s. Fern and Lloyd here in p.m. I went over to Denmark with them. Also Blanche called. Bill drove the car onto the barn for first time tonight. We went down to Jean’s in evening.

Monday, November 21, 1960

I washed, clothes didn’t dry at all. Rowena and Linda up here.



Tuesday, November 22, 1960

A very nice day. I went to town in morning would Lloyd. In p.m. I cooked, churned etc. Betty home from school. In evening Linda Berry and Rowena came up. I ironed in evening. Billie worked again tonight. Kennard called.


Wednesday, November 23, 1960

Cloudy most all day. Cleared off in late p.m. I cooked and made preparations for Thanksgiving. Cleaned up the whole house. In late p.m. Allen Nash and children came up here for Dr. Nash to spend the holiday with them. Betty got a letter from Mike. Blanche called. Blanche bought me a very pretty and large turkey platter and shakers to match. In evening Billie got his haircut. Betty, Billie and I went down and called on Dawn and George. Steve at their home in north Sebago.
