The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Thursday, December 29, 1960 20 Below

A very cold day. I washed. Bonnie and Rowena here this forenoon. Bonnie stayed here all night. Got my papers all read today.





Friday, December 30, 1960 B. had tooth pulled, Bill 52

A nice day in the 20s. I cleaned up the house, churned. Betty had a tooth pulled and one filled. She and Rowena came home around 10 AM. Betty’s mouth sore. She and Rowena went back to town. Betty didn’t stay. Came home with a very sore mouth, took it easy rest of the day and night. Nola Raye here today also Dolores called. In evening I went to town with Bill. Bill is 52 today. Ronald and family went back home today.



Saturday, December 31, 1960

A very nice day another mild one. I done up the housework. Cooked. Betty got lunch, made cookies, cleaned up rest of the house. Billie gone to Canton with Art Ward to see some cattle. Bill over to Jim’s and downtown. The pictures came today of Betty.
Today is the end of 1960. Had Dorothea and Jeffie with us for a month this year. Had a nice garden this past year. Bought a 1956 green Plymouth. Also a homemade tractor. Billie began work on a steady job at Dielectric. Betty began her last year of school. MIKE here tonight and a friend of his. We watched the old year out and the new one in. Dr. Nash came back today from his sons. Goodbye 1960 the end has come.

Our cake mixes will blow your mind & taste so much better than a store-bought mix!
