The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 13 - 16, 1960



Tuesday, December 13, 1960

Another cold cold day. I went to town with Lloyd in a.m. I came home, finished Esther’s letter. Wrapped Mama’s Christmas gifts. I got the class pictures of Betty off today.



Wednesday, December 14, 1960

Warmer during the day. It was zero this morning. I washed and done a little cooking. We got rest of cards off today. Betty started to get her tree in tonight but didn’t. Sara up in late p.m. and combed out my hair. Billie to Dr. again today with his eye, it is bad again. Got Dorothea and Jeff cards with her gift in it off today.



Thursday, December 15, 1960

A nice day, very cold this morning. Warmed up in day. Billie still home. Eye is better. I cleaned up the whole house and washed all the floors. In p.m. I went down and got Betty’s other tree. Mrs. Parker came and got a tree tonight. Also Errol Briggs and Randy Harmon here for supper. After supper they went to the BHS game with Gould Academy. BHS won the game. Billie and I down to Ferns in evening.





Friday, December 16, 1960 Letter from Adair’s

Cloudy and rainy. I churned, ironed, done up the housework. Got Christmas cards and letter from Dorothea. Tonight Betty got the tree in and decorated while Bill and I went to town. Snowed tonight while we were in town. Much warmer today. Billie back to work today.
