The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Thursday, September 30, 1993

 

A very nice clear day. David and Carmen came, done the chores. I took a bath. Carmen came and got me and took me to the doctor for checkup. Also for blood tests. Everything is okay. Carmen and Arnold were fencing at Betty’s today. Carmen got the supper tonight. Cameron is kind of sick with a cold. Carmen took Betty’s hens over to Wade’s and had them dressed today, got them tonight.

 

 

 

Friday, October 1, 1993

 

Carmen came early and got all her work done. Arnold took care of Cameron. Billie’s nurse came and got his blood sample. David came and did the chores. It has been a nice day, on the coolside. Dorothea came and got the supper tonight. Had a good one. They all do so well getting meals.

 

 

 

Saturday, October 2, 1993

 

David came and done the chores this morning. Carmen came and did all the things for Billie. A lot to it. Brogan came for a little while. Jeff and his girlfriend up to camp this weekend.

 

 

Sunday, October 3, 1993

 

It was raining in the morning. It cleared off and quite nice rest of the day. I wrote to Esther and Betty Milne. David and Carmen here and done their thing. Walt up for coffee. Dorothea came and got the supper. Welsh rabbit. Very good. In p.m. Carmen came and got me. I went up to see her Christmas gifts she bought and her Scotland trip things which was very interesting.
