The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 7 - 10, 1993 Nanny's Birthday - Sadly Her Last One

 

Saturday, August 7, 1993

 

A nice sunny day. I done up the work. What little I did. Esther busy. I went to Oxford with Carmen and kids. Also Zak and Betty went in Betty’s car. I got vegetables etc. at the vegetable stand. Carmen did a day of shopping. Came home. Dorothea and Esther got the supper. A good one.

ALTHEA GREEN SMITH CROOK 83. I had a very nice birthday. I got money and a lot of chocolates. A very pretty dress. I got a pretty little dish from Susan. Money from Betty Smith, money from Dorothea ,David, money from Betty and Walt. Writing paper and pens and envelopes from Betty, Walt and Zak. I got candy from Tom and Kim, Cameron and Brogan and Carmen. Joy, Cindy, Betty and Walt. A bag of Hershey’s candy from Brogan, picture frame from Cameron. Monday, August 9, 1993

 

Up early, got dressed. Didn’t do much as usual. Got the washing to going. Esther and Carmen did it all. Esther got ready and went to North Conway was Susan to shop. They had a nice day. Betty and Walt went to Portland today for Betty’s appointment at the dentist. We had thunder shower and heavy rain this p.m. Betty came and got the supper tonight. Carmen worked last night, she had a chance to sleep this p.m. Betty brought some corn out from her garden tonight. Oil came today.

 

 

 

Tuesday, August 10, 1993

 

David came for coffee. Carmen came, did some work. Susan came, brought Esther’s package over. Brogan stayed here last night. Betty came and got Betty, they went down town for a little while. Betty and Esther got the supper. Italian sandwiches. It has been a very cloudy day all day. Brogan here for the night. Carmen had to work from  12-7. David came and did the chores.
