The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Sunday, August 15, 1993

 

A very nice sunny day. Walt and David came for coffee. Today we went down to Cornish, Standish, all down through that way. It has changed so much down that way. No farming land, cows, animals. Things have changed so much. Dorothea, Betty, Carmen, Betty, Esther, Zak and Brogan and me all went. Bro likes to go. They bought only a few things. We enjoyed the ride very much then we ate supper at Richard’s in Sebago. After we got home Esther got a invitation to go and Betty S to the concert. They enjoyed it very much. Walt took care of Cameron.

 

 

 

Monday, August 16, 1993

 

Another nice and sunny day. Carmen came early, done washing and rest of the work. David came and did the chores etc. Betty got the supper. This forenoon Nona Smith and Linda Smith called to visit a little while. Esther made cookies all this forenoon. Walt up for supper tonight. Brogan here tonight, what a talker she is. Verna, Linda and Nona all went home today.

 

 

 

Tuesday, August 17, 1993

 

It was cloudy today. Esther went to Portland with Susan. Gone all day. Here alone most of the day. Betty came, got the supper. Betty helped. She brought up some more albums. Tom called this forenoon and then Kim and Brogan came. The rain was welcome. David done the chores this morning.

 

 

 

Wednesday, August 18, 1993

 

A nice day, sat on the porch all day. Carmen done the supper, had steaks and a good supper. Betty and Walt had company, his sister and her husband. We did a wash today. David came and done the chores and had coffee.
