The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 22 - 25, 1993 Camp Cookout

Monday, August 22, 1993

On the cool side when we got up. Very nice. We went to camp and had a cookout. First one for over a year. A small crowd. It was a very nice sunny day, not beach weather. Ate hot dogs and hamburgers. It was very quiet up there, not even the dogs bothered. Too cool for them. Brogan was very sick, BJ was tired. Baby was good, he slept all p.m. Betty, Walt, Dorothea, Esther, Betty S, Carmen, Arnold, BJ, Brogan, Joy and me. Brought Billie home some food.

A quite nice day. Zak up today. He came last night, he and his friend Chris Watson had been out together for the day. He is going back to work and to school. He is doing very well and enjoys his schoolwork very much. Also is doing good at his work. I’m so glad for him at last he is doing very well at what he always wanted to do. Brogan better today. I hope no one here gets what she had. Cameron is so smart, good-looking and smart and cute. I love those two babies.

A partly cloudy day. It was quite hot. I done a wash this morning. Carmen came, she had three customers this morning. We had Cameron while she worked. Then she came and got me and I went down to the back shed while they worked down there cleaning it out. Came home, Betty and Carmen loaded the wood down cellar and hauled it up to camp. Esther had a good supper tonight. She had been down town with Susan. Cameron and Brogan enjoyed it down back shed. In evening Brogan came and spent the night, was home sick and gone home.
