The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

This has been a nice sunny day. Dorothea came and done a week’s work. Betty has been busy all day cleaning up her house and getting ready for the big weekend. Carmen’s right out straight all day. To town shopping. Going to the bank. She came to the hospital where I was. Dorothea took me to see the doctor. I have swollen ankles, one leg is oozing. I had the works down there. To cap it all I got a mess of pills to take. I hate that.

It has been a cloudy dreary day. It rained some which we need it so bad. Carmen and Dorothea came this morning. Dorothea went down and got my pills. Carmen came and made the bed etc. She and Dorothea did all my work. Betty and Walt entertained friends up to the camp. Brogan was up there today also. And Carmen and Cameron went up later.

A very nice sunny day, there was a good breeze to help dry the hay. Saliba came and mowed David’s hay early this morning. He came down and done the chores then he had coffee. I got ready to go to the parade with Carmen. Betty Smith went with Dorothea. It was a very nice parade. Betty is having a good time at camp with their friends. Arnold is working over on Walt’s lot today. Fred, Wanda, Phonie and Susan was with us at the parade too.
