The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Wednesday, September 22, 1993

 

Carmen came. She did her chores. Then she went home and put him down for his nap. She came back in p.m. got the supper. Cameron is so cute all the time and keeps everyone on the move. Betty took the kids while Carmen went to a teacher’s meeting. Dorothea dropped in for a minute.

 

 

 

Thursday, September 23, 1993

 

Cloudy than late in p.m it rained. Carmen came and did her work for us. Also she got the meat on for the boiled dinner, got the vegetables ready. She came, got the lunch etc. I didn’t do much today. I never do.

 

 

 

Friday, September 24, 1993

 

On the cool windy side. Carmen came early. Cameron was home with Arnold. So Carmen flew around and got the work all done quick. She tended Billie, washed breakfast dishes, changed the beds, did a big wash. Swept, dusted etc. etc. She came back, got the lunch. Cam came later. His father brought him. In late p.m. Dorothea came for supper. She spent the evening. Carmen shampooed my hair today.

 

 

 

Saturday, September 25, 1993

 

A beautiful day, on the coolish side. Carmen came and did the work, took care of Billie. David came and did the chores. Betty came and got supper, good boiled dinner supper hash. I got magazines read today. Also a few other things I did. It was very nice, sunny bright day.
